How Communication Will Change Drastically in 2020

The Change

Recently, mobile network providers have released a new generation of technology called 5G. While this doesn't sound like it is new because many cellphone providers have coined the name, the reality is that in 2019 5G will change the way people communicate through technology. The New York Times has explained in an article that, "Strictly speaking, 5G is a set of technical ground rules that define the workings of a cellular network, including the radio frequencies used and how various components like computer chips and antennas handle radio signals and exchange data."

Currently, cellular devices are on what's called 4G. The new cellular network, 5G, is said to be 20 times faster than the current. This new speed will benefit people in all fields, but most specifically those in virtual reality, medicine, and sports communication. Commanding phones to do simple tasks such as looking something up on the internet will be faster and sending and receiving messages will be faster as well.

Not everyone is innovating on the subject. The U.S. and China are currently leading the game, but countries such as Switzerland, Britain, Germany, and Australia are also working on launching the new network.  Consumers will have to purchase new phones; however, it is expected that the demand for them will be high. Individuals have the ability to download movies or large document files in seconds rather than minutes, something consumers desire.

Effect to Communication

This will affect communication all over the world. It will allow people on opposite sides of the country to communicate faster and send each other information in seconds. The process of research and design will be impacted by the new speedy processes that 5G offers. Sports will be affected because it was mentioned that with the new network, one can point the smartphone camera at a game and player statistics could show on the side of the live video. Journalism and Broadcasting will be sped up and people will be able to access information faster, making everyone more informed.

When Exactly is This Happening?

While this is being discussed today, the actual rollout of the network and devices compatible with it will be in later 2019 or 2020. Network providers like Verizon, AT&T, Sprint, and T-Mobil are currently working to create devices that allow customers 5G access, but it is advised to purchase products later once more providers and devices are compatible with 5G on a large scale.
